Website maintenance: updates, performance, security and recovery
Define a practical maintenance scope for an existing company website or online store, including access, updates, monitoring and restore checks.

A company website or store needs continuing care after launch. Updates, integrations and content changes can affect availability and security, so maintenance should have an agreed scope and owner.
Start with the current condition
Inventory the CMS, themes, plugins, application code, hosting accounts and connected services. Identify unsupported components and check whether the team has access to the source, backups and deployment process.
Make changes safely
Use an appropriate test environment for updates that could affect users. Check important journeys such as search, forms, login and checkout where applicable. Keep records of changes and a rollback plan.
Reduce avoidable exposure
Review accounts, privileges, authentication and unnecessary extensions. Keep software supported and monitor relevant events. Security work reduces identified risks; it cannot promise that an incident will never occur.
Investigate performance
Measure page and server behavior before choosing caching, image, database or infrastructure changes. Validate the effect on real workflows. Speed work should not break content freshness, permissions or transactional behavior.
Verify recovery
Backups need a defined scope, retention and access policy. Test a restore and record what is required to recover the application and its data. A successful backup job alone does not prove that the service can be restored.
Agree the service boundary
Specify coverage, response targets, reporting, planned maintenance and out-of-scope work. New features, third-party incidents and emergency work may need separate arrangements. Choose these terms around business impact rather than a tier name alone.
